- Why pain needs to be treated at the earliest.
In the past patients were asked to bear pain as much as possible. But now research has shown that pain should be treated at the earliest to avoid becoming chronic. If pain is left untreated, it may adversely affect various aspects of life and become more and more difficult to treat. A simple physical pain may now affect psychological and social aspects of a patient’s life. - Should chronic pain be managed by a specialized team?
Simply speaking, Chronic pain is a pain that is present for more than 3 months. As more and more research is taking place, treating pain is no longer taking a pain killer like paracetamol. Chronic pain management is a highly specialized field now and needs a comprehensive approach to giving long-lasting relief to patients. At Noida Pain Management Clinic we treat pain as a whole, including its emotional and spiritual aspects, apart from its physical aspects.

- What is the aim of treating pain?
At all times patients should be able to live a pain-free life and pain shouldn’t hamper their ability to work and discharge their social duties. So a patient who is lying in bed due to long-lasting pain may slowly develop anxiety and then depression as he is unable to discharge personal and professional duties. Over time they may develop a certain “Pain behaviour” limiting their interaction with others and living in a perpetual cycle of pain.
- Myths about treating chronic pain?
1. Pain will remain as long as I am alive.
Most patients get good relief with medicines and certain lifestyle changes. People living with chronic pain can expect a near-normal quality of life if they follow the doctor’s advice judiciously. Of course, all patients need different times to respond. Some patients do well within days to some require weeks to get good relief from pain.
2. Medicines are habit-forming.
As there are different kinds of pain (nociceptive, neuropathic, etc.) there are many pain medicines like routine NSAIDs (called painkillers) and nerve medicines. Most of the time patients are prescribed the wrong type of medicines by unqualified quacks, making a patient fearful of these medicines. Most patients who take them under the supervision of a qualified doctor, don’t become dependent. As patients become pain-free and start exercising, these medicines’ doses are slowly decreased and then stopped in most cases.
3. I saw on some social media that they are harmful.
Treating pain involves judicious knowledge of medicines and their side effects. A qualified pain physician will start only a few medicines at the lowest possible dose for a short time. Also, from time to time, they will ask patients to do routine blood tests to see if any adjustment in dose is required. Most of the time all these medicines are well tolerated and if, taken under the supervision of a qualified pain doctor, are safe.
