Almost all of us experience neck pain these days. It is especially common in those working on computers for a long time or have a sedentary job. Neck pain can be caused by several reasons but is mostly related to aging. Common causes of neck pain-
  • Aging- Degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis and spinal stenosis can lead to neck pain with advancing age. Over time, stress and repeated movements can cause the disks in your spine to weaken, causing a herniated disk or pinched nerve.
  • Neck pain caused by overuse of neck muscles- People engaged in IT professions have to often use their neck muscles for long periods.  repetitive or strenuous activities can lead to stiffness and pain. These days people use laptops and mobiles continuously for long hours leading to neck pain.
  • Herniated disc- Sometimes neck pain can be due to a herniated disc which can protrude and start compressing nerves. If severe it can cause pain in the arm also leading to Cervical Radiculopathy.
  • Stress-  Many people tighten their neck muscles whenever they are under stress.
Prevention of neck pain -
  • By maintaining a good posture - We must keep our shoulders are in a straight line over our hips. When using cell phones, tablets, and other small screens we should keep our head up and hold the device straight out rather than bending our neck.
  • By taking frequent breaks especially those working on laptops - Also people should keep their desktops and laptops at eye level.
  • Quit smoking - Smoking reduces the blood supply of the disc which can lead to neck pain.
  • Avoid using thick pillows
  • Exercises - The most important way to keep neck muscles strong is by regular exercising. Stay active.
