Which symptoms are common in tennis elbow patients? Most patients complain of the following-
Pain in the outer part of the elbow on movements of the wrist. Also if we press on the elbow again there will be pain.
There is difficulty in holding a cup or glass in hand.
Gripping strength may become weaker over time.
After some time pain is more during the night but after some time it's present all the time.
Diagnosis- Most cases of tennis elbow can be easily diagnosed by physical examination. Yet a simple X-ray of the elbow and complete blood count must be done.
How should we treat a patient of tennis elbow pain? As with most chronic painful conditions, initially, conservative treatment is done-
Rest- Any activity causing pain must be stopped for a few days. Females should avoid household chores like washing clothes for some time. Similarly, those players who play badminton or tennis should also stop playing for a few days.
Hot and cold fomentation- Patients can also do cold or sometimes hot compress for 5-10 minutes 3-4 times a day. Topical skin gels can also be applied.
Medicines- A short course of NSAIDs should be given initially to reduce pain. These should be taken only for a short duration under the consultation of a qualified pain doctor.
Exercises- If the patient has good relief with all the above measures, then they can do a few simple elbow exercises. But if pain increases with the exercises, then they should be stopped and the patient should consult a doctor.
Injections- In a few patients who have had tennis elbow for a long time or who didn’t get any relief with the medicines, a simple injection in the elbow can give quite good relief. Both steroids and injections are used for this depending on the patient’s condition.
