Often patient feels Burning, tingling or stabbing like feeling with or without pain in their hands and feets.
These are the superficial nerves (outside the brain and spinal cord) which gets damaged and this condition generally called as sensory peripheral neuropathy or peripheral neuropathy.
What causes Peripheral neuropathy?
There can be many many causes but most important one are --
1) Vitamin deficiency (B1, B6 and B12).
2) High blood sugar (Uncontrolled diabetes).
3) Long term Alcohol intake (causes vit B deficiency)
4) Because of specific nerve compression (Carple / Tarsal tunnel syndrome).
5) Because of cancer chemotherapy (anticancer drugs) side effects.
Others- Injury or trauma, hereditary conditions, Autoimmune problems and Chronic kidney and liver problems.
How do we deal with peripheral neuropathy?
First step :-
To understand the type of nerve damage.
Meet your doctor to know the actual cause of your problem.
Second step :-
Make necessary changes in your lifestyle like
Adequate sleep
Control of blood sugar.
Say no to alcohol
Frequent exercises
Balanced diet
Third step:-
To relieve your symptoms (burning/ tingling / pain).
Regular follow up to your doctor and take treatment like Nerve medicines, Nerve block injections, Physical therapy or Ice pack etc.)
Steroids or surgery may require in specific cases.
