Do you feel pain in your lower back coming down to your leg?
Then you may be suffering from sciatica?
How Sciatica triggers ?
Sciatica occurs when the Sciatic nerve, which goes from the lower back to legs, either compress or irritate.
This can be because of any injury, slipped disc, Infection and many more.
How it feels ?
Typically it feels like a sharp shooting pain in leg and buttocks and /or feels like burning and tingling sensation in you thigh and calf area.
How to diagnose Sciatica?
Self diagnosing can be confusing as it mimics several other causes.
So professional evaluation is recommended. However pain in lower back and going towards thigh and leg and increses during activity or prolonged sitting gives hint towards Sciatica pain.
Managing Sciatica pain
There can be many ways that you can manage your pain a bit before visiting your doctor.
Posture correction and avoid staying in one position for more then 30 mins except in lying down position.
Avoid forward bending , heavy weight lifting and cross leg sitting on the floor.
Avoid doing heavy exercises if pain is more. Once pain comes down then stretching exercises can be done and may help in relieving pain.
Rest, Over the counter pain medicines and physiotherapy may help in releiving pain.
If pain is not settling down with these measures then you may require nerve medications and few tests to diagnose it completely and may require a spine nerve injections by your pain management doctor.
In case of limb weakness or neurological deficit surgery can be advisable.
