What is Myofascial pain?
Often we feel aching like pain in our muscles which can be in a specific area or diffuse not localised. This type of pain is called as Myofascial pain.
What are Trigger points? Or myofascial trigger points?
This muscle pain can be because of localised hyperirritable and hypersensitive spots in your muscle which can cause pain, stiffness and limited range of motion. These hyperirritable spots are called trigger points.
What are the common location and Age group involved in myofascial trigger paoints?
Trigger points or myofascial pain can be anywhere but common areas are neck, shoulders, back and hip.
It can occurs in all age groups but commonly present in elderly population.
What are the causes of muscle trigger points?
Muscle overuse (prolonged sitting or standing or working in same posture) or any muscle injury can cause these.
Poor posture can put extra strain on specific muscles and can lead to trigger points.
Vitamin deficiency- Low level of vitamines especially Vit D and Mg is associated with muscle pain and myofascial trigger points.
Stress and tension - Causes muscles to tense up and lead to trigger points.
How can we manage or treat these muscle trigger points?
Posture correction: Keep your posture correct and avoid sitting or standing in same position for long. Keep changing your position in every 45 mins to 60 mins.
Physical exercise:Regular stretching and strengthening exercises for 20 mins to avoid muscle pain and also for stress buster .
Good nutrition and correct deficiencies: Make a habit of having nutritious and balanced diet. Visit your pain specialist and correct your Vitamin deficiency especially. Vit D and Mg.
Medications: Your pain specialist may have to start some neuropathic and anti-inflammatory Medications to give you releif in muscle pain.
Needling and injections: If your pain is not settling down with all above measures then your doctor may give you trigger points injections over the affected area with or without medicines to keep you pain free.
