Now a days, in almost 50% prescriptions, you will see that doctor has prescribed vitamin D 60000 IU either weekly or monthly. 
What are the reasons behind it? and what happen if you excess the dosage of vitamin D ?
 
How Vitamin - D works?
  1. It carries calcium from blood to bones make stronger bones.
  2. It acts as a lipid soluble steroid which helps in brain functioning also as well as normal muscle contraction because of important role in protein formation in muscle cells.
What are the normal levels of Vitamin-D?
Normal levels are usually more then 30 ng /ml
Severe deficiency when it is less then 10 ng /ml 
 
What do you feel during low vitamin D ?
  • Generalised weaknes and lethargy
  • Widespread body pain 
  • Nonspecific back pain 
  • Nonspecific muscle pain
From where you can get vitamin -D naturally?
  • Sunlight (body make vitamin d in the skin with the help of sunlight).
  • Animal sources (fortified milk , egg yolk, fish, red meat etc.

How much vit d should we take?
  • If you are feeling lethargy and/or muscle or body pain then visit your doctor. 
  • Doctor will examined and may write blood test including serum vitamin -D levels. 
  • Generally the dose of vitamin - D is once in a week for 8-12 weeks and it same for 2 years to 70 years age group. but it can vary as per the blood test report as well as the age.
  • so visit to your doctor and take vitamin - D under supervision only.
What will happen if you take more vitamin -D?
  • If you overdose vitamin -d then toxicity can occur.
  • If levels are consistently higher then the above limit then it causes hypercalcemia (more calcium) in the body.
  • Person may feel Lethargy, loss of apatite, feeling of vomiting, weakness and finally kidney failure.
  • So it is advisable to do a regular blood test of vitamin -D to monitor it and always take vitamin -D under supervision of doctor.
